We have been making progress on the re-developed version of the famous and much talked about Helios Microphone/equaliser module. The original transformer in these units had a major influence to the overall sound and to our knowledge no microphone transformer exists in production which compared with the original design. Two or three manufacturers claim to have designed a replacement but this is true of only impedance matching and level input/output levels.
Back in 1979 the original Olympic Recording Studio1 and 2 pre-Helios modules were housed in the meter bridge of the Raindirk series 3 remix console as line input only. During 2011 these modules were released by Keith Grant the former studio manager and owner of the console to have the modules restored to their former condition. Fortunately Raindirk were already designing the Lustraphone replacement that was required.
The original transformer laminations and winding bobbin were copied to original specification. The laminations particularly have been laser cut and heat treated to match the originals resulting in a truly faithful copy which is now enjoyed by a number of recording engineers and producers. Many existing modules with Beyer and Sowter transformers have been retro- fitted with the new Lustraphone.
As a result of all the demand for our Lustraphone transformers we are now at the prototype stage for our own Raindirk Lustraphone Microphone/Equaliser modules. We are also planning to supply a bespoke rack mounting lunchbox style unit which can house up to eight modules - see the graphic link to the right for an early idea of the module layout. Watch this space for further updates and news about the prototype!
We also continue to offer the existing range of RM range of modules in 2U, 3Uand 4U units – please see the price list at the top of the page for the latest configurations available.
